Occupational Therapy Scope of Practice in India - IOTT invites public comments



Dear all,

To educate stakeholders and overcome the issue of professional boundary violations due to the lack of awareness/clarity regarding the OT profession's scope of practice, the Indian OTs Think Tank (IOTT) group has drafted a scope of practice document with respect to the Indian context of practice. The group is soliciting public comments on the draft. 

Please review the draft and submit your comments in the comments section of this post. Only comments submitted here in response to this post on or before July 20, 2020 will be considered during the amendment process.

    First of all, kudos to all your efforts.
    In the settings where OTs work, you have left out "home".

    Dear Dr Kartik
    In my opion the definiation of occupational Therapy should be as
    Occupational Therapy is specialized branch of Medical Health Sciences to prevent, cure/treat & rehabilitate any physical , mental/psychological, Cognitive and social illness/impairment/dysfunction using Direct & Indirect specialized therapeutic procedure & techniques & physical agent modalities (as an adjunct) including assistive technology aids & appliances and if required using compensatory starategies to make either the patient fit to the environment & vice versa in order to Promote, restore, enhance & improve Quality of life (QOL)
    thereby restoring functional performance ability & capability.
    Further kindly correct the term to Adaptive devices not Adapt devices

      Thank you for your comment. The definitions used in the SOP are from WFOT and AIOTA. If this comment is related to the IOTT drafted public/healthcare professionals, the idea is to provide a simple definition with less jargon so that other stakeholders can understand what OT is. As mentioned in the disclaimer below the definitions, they are field tested and are meant only for awareness promotion purposes.

      Please read the bullet carefully. The word 'adapt' is used as a verb and not as a noun.

    Dear sir/man,
    I am Benny a fresher in occupational therapy. I think there is a lot of scopes in occupational therapy... it is how we make way for it and also make use of it. Occupational therapy doesn't have to be constrained in a small box cause it has opportunities like pearl in sea ... only if we find it we will be get through it .... more than conditions we have role and scope of occupational therapy in each and every settings and work place....and my only concern on it is that we are not aware of many things and there learning and awareness is also less at this point of time.... we have scopes in different settings
    Multispecialty hospitals
    Rehabilitation centres
    Non governmental organisations
    Industries and factories
    Teaching undergraduates and postgraduates
    Private practice/ private clinics
    Geriatric homes/ old age homes
    Care homes
    Mental (psychiatry ) hospital

Occupational Therapy Definition for the General Public (English)

What is occupational therapy? Occupational therapy (OT) is an allied health profession. The word ‘occupation’ refers to all activities that we do in our daily life such as bathing, dressing, job or school related activities, play, hobby, etc. When a health problem affects a person’s ability to do daily activities, OT can help overcome the difficulties by improving his/her skills, learning a modified method, and/or modifying the environment.
